As a first time speed flying student I didn’t know what to expect when I signed up for the Ground Launching camp in Utah. I figured if Joey Jones and Clint Clawson were organizing it, how could I go wrong? I was right, this camp was awesome. After a full day of training with Joey, Clint, and the local speed flying coaches, Carson and Kade, I was up and running down the mountains.
The weather was predictably perfect and by my second day of launching I was able to head out to the back country and launch myself off some pretty gnarly cliffs, while still under the supervision of professionals. I would suggest this to anyone who has a decent amount of canopy experience under a skydiving parachute.
I think this camp would be great for people that are relatively inexperienced with a canopy, or even with no experience at all. Although, I wouldn’t suggest the speed flying, I would definitely suggest a paragliding course or two so that you could work your way into the sport of speed flying. I watched several paragliders while I was launching and it looks like a great experience; although it seems a little slow for my taste.
Joey, Clint, you can definitely count me in on your next trip!
Peace,
Chip
